The Nolan Gallery Collection began in 1974 when Sidney Nolan generously donated twenty-four of his paintings to the people of Australia.

This donation includes the first of the artist's Kelly paintings (1945) and the first in the Burke and Wills series (1948). The original donation is referred to as the Foundation Collection.

Throughout his lifetime, Nolan continued to donate his work to the collection. Other series include For the Term of His Natural Life, the Rimbaud/Cezanne drawings and the Illuminations, a collection of paintings based on Rimbaud's poetry.
