The history of an Australian symbol

3 July - 31 October
Open Collection

On 1st September 2010 Australia celebrates
100 years since the inaugural National
Wattle Day.

Edwin Ride has spent the last five years gathering a collection that illustrates how
wattle has been used to inspire national pride, to market a never-ending array of commercial products and to decorate our homes, becoming a national symbol in the process.

"I started about five years ago, after becoming aware through a “Week of the Wattle” program at the National Botanic Gardens of the amazing variety of ways that wattle is and has been important to Australians, both as an economic resource and as a symbol. After a few false starts I settled on my chosen path of exploring the history of wattle as a symbol of Australia."
