Housing a permanent collection, Reflecting Canberra, and a variety of local, national and international exhibitions, CMAG provides a refreshing insight to the integration of social history and the visual arts.
A morning tea was held at Canberra Museum and Gallery Tuesday 15 march for the opening of the Canberra Gold exhibition where the President of the Canberra District Historical Society (CDHS) handed over one of the six original flags ordered around 1929 by the Federal Capital Commission.
The flag is one of the earliest depictions of the armorial bearings which had only been adopted in 1928.
As the Territory did not have an official flag until 1993, and this flag was used as an unofficial Territory flag from 1929, it can be said to be Canberra’s ‘first’ flag.

Also attending the morning tea is Koomarri CEO Miranda Garnett, pictured here with Harriet Elvin and exhibition curator Rowan Henderson.
