From A to Z: Robert Messenger's typewriters

Canberra Times journalist Robert Messenger showcases his amazing collection of rare, beautiful and historic typewriters and typewriter ephemera in this exhibition at Canberra Museum and Gallery.

Robert started collecting typewriters in
2001 and his collection, known as the Australian Typewriter Museum, now numbers nearly 1000. This is the largest privately owned collection of typewriters in Australia.

Robert Messenger first used a typewriter
in 1957 when, aged nine, his father gave
him an Underwood Universal.

Beginning his career as a journalist during the age of the typewriter but as computers conquered the office environment, Robert yearned to recover the machines of his
early years.
